Butchery is the act of using a Hunting Knife on the corpse of a creature in order to recover craft materials.

It is a craft skill with it's own level, beginning at 1 and capping at 150. An increase in skill level allows the user to utilize better Hunting Knives, yielding more materials per usage.

Contents

Purpose

Butchery is used to acquire the following materials:

Bone.jpg Bone
Chitin.jpg Chitin
Hide.jpg Hide
Sinew.jpg Sinew
Tallow.jpg Tallow

These materials are required extensively in the crafting of weapons, armor, tools and in spellbinding.

Due to the importance of crafted items in the game, butchered materials are also a major component of the games economy.

Application

Basic rules for butchery:

  • The player must have a Hunting Knife to butcher.
  • The player's butchery skill level must meet or exceed the minimum requirement of the Hunting Knife they are attempting to butcher with.
  • When crafting a Hunting Knife, the minimum butchery skill level requirement will be three times higher than the recipe's item level.
  • Most creatures produce two types of butchered materials. Some, always associated with bone, drop one, while others cannot be butchered.
  • If a creature is killed by a player more than 8 levels higher than it then its corpse cannot be butchered.
  • A player more than 8 levels higher than a creature may butcher a corpse if it is killed by a player within 8 levels of it.
  • To have permission to butcher a corpse, the player must either be credited as the killer of the creature or be sharing a fellowship with the killer. The latter case is then subject to fellowship loot settings.

Starting Out

Any player may craft a Crude Hunting Knife for no cost and no skill requirement from the following location:

  • Skills Panel -> Craft Tab -> Tools -> Starter Tools -> Crude Hunting Knife

A Crude Hunting Knife has a durability of 50/50. When this amount reaches 0/50 the knife will be destroyed and vanish from your inventory. Additionally, there is a 3 hour reset timer before another Crafting Hunting Knife can be made.

To use your knife:

  • Kill a creature.
  • Double-click the Hunting Knife or select it and press the "Use Item" key (typically "Z" or "F").
  • Point your cursor, now a green circle, over the corpse and click it.

Shortcutting Butchery

By dragging a Hunting Knife to the hotkey bar you can expedite the process of butchery.

Hunting Knife Hotkey Bar Example 1.png

With the above layout, pressing the "1" key would use the Hunting Knife, turning the cursor into a green circle, ready to be used on a corpse.

Alternatively, due to the usefulness of the "Shortcut 1" slot for combat skills, you may wish to place the Hunting Knife in a less useful slot and change the key(s) associated with that slots function.

Hunting Knife Hotkey Bar Example 2.png

In this second example, the "Shortcut 10 (second row)" key could be changed from "Shift+0" to a more convenient key, such as "V".

Another key useful in butchering is "Target Next Item" (typically "I" or "O"). This key will cycle through nearby items, including corpses. You may also wish to change this key to a more convenient one.

With this setup, you may butcher by:

  • Pressing the "Target Next Item" key until the corpse is selected.
  • Pressing the Hunting Knife hotkey.
  • Pressing the "Use Item" key.

Better Knives

The recipe for non-starter Hunting Knives is located at:

  • Skills Panel -> Craft Tab -> Tools -> Resource Tools -> Hunting Knife

Unlike Starter Tools, Resource Tools require materials and have a difficulty level. The benefit of using these knives is twofold:

  • An increase in yield of butchered materials per corpse. The yield bonus increases proportionate to the knife's item level.
  • A standard durability of 100/100. A critical success will produce a 200/200 durability.

Creatures by Butchered Type

The following creatures produce one of two types of butchered material at random:
